Outdoor events are coming back! So it is time to pay attention to the signs you see around your town. Take notice of banners says “Sunday concert in the park is back!”, “Live music at the Farmers Market”, Food Truck event with special music guests, Art Walk Thursdays or Summer concerts on the pier.
EXPLORING YOUR OWN CITY!
Every city has special events during the summer all the way into cold weather. Some may still not be open this summer but may be hosting a Labor Day outdoor event, harvest fall fest, Halloween Costume party, October Breast Cancer walk, monthly art walk, City anniversary party and of course Christmas & New Years event.
How do you let your city know you are available to perform? Go to the City of (YOUR CITY NAME), look for the DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKS. If anything happens in the city, that department knows who is doing what. Also, you may be directed to the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE from that site.
Your chamber of commerce is also a separate office that is actually a membership of local businesses. I always suggest you look into becoming a member in your area. If someone is looking for a type of business or even musician or artist, some people will call and see if the chamber will recommend someone in the area. For this office, call on the phone and ask if they know any events hosting music.
Some of the events that may not be advertised are: Rotary Club meetings, Chamber lunch or dinner meetings, special events through the l“ Sunday concert in the park, art center or small theaters.
JOINING THE COUNTY FAIR!
Many of the regular county fairs are still not open this year, but some of those that usually happen at the end of the summer into the fall, have moved their dates to February & March 2022. So you are not too late to book those dates! BUT pay attention to what is going on at some of those County Fairgrounds. Our Ventura County Fairgrounds has been hosting “Concerts in Your Car” events in those big parking lots all through the pandemic. So also check your Drive-In Theaters if you have any near you.
Another idea is to check out your “DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM” for your state. All kinds of events are listed here like Food Fairs, Fruit Festivals, Wine Events, Attraction Parks….etc! If any of these are scheduled for the fall, they may be just the first ones open in your area to need entertainment.
Or if you belong to AAA, in back of the magazine there is a list of events coming up in your state. Remember if you are too late to be booked for this year, contact the event anyway and find out how far in advance do they book. Most of these type of venues book 6 to 9 months in advance. So if you want to be booked next summer, it really is NOT too soon to email them and find out when you can submit your live performance video.
OTHER EVENTS & HOLIDAYS!
I know many of you would love to get back to touring….in future blogs we will talk about when to start booking those for next year. But right now, we are concentrating on your surrounding areas. Do you have a beach, pier, farmers market, mall or other open spaces that usually have some kind of community activity going on?
Pay attention to the signs and banners around your streets. Even take a ride to other areas within an hour of your home. Check out the local newspapers. Yes, newspapers. I know many of them are online, but even the smallest of communities host a weekly events calendar somewhere online or have physical copies at restaurants. Also, google ‘Entertainment Newspaper & your city.” You may be surprised you have a site that lists everything going on right in your immediate area.
Sometimes musicians forget about all the BIG holiday celebrations that happen during the year. Again, usually the many of these are hosted by the city…so go ahead and look at the calendar and start sending those emails or google the event and see if there is a website or an email contact.
Other activities that need music or singers? Contact area community centers, banquet halls & hotels that may be hosting weddings, anniversaries & other events where they need music. Maybe even your local church! Many church services are coming back and the have a full band that plays every week and some even host a guest singer/musician every week.
SO…explore your immediate area. You may just find enough work to help support that independent music project you are pushing out to the world!
