If you have an important item you keep moving to the next week….here are 4 usual reasons that are preventing you from making that call or finishing that item.
1.You are not confident you have what you need to do a good pitch 2.You are afraid to make the connection 3.You know you don’t have the skills needed to complete your task 4.It takes more funds than you have to complete your project
ASK FOR HELP! You need to find a mentor who will walk you through a pitch so you can feel confident to reach out to your contact. Below are some items I suggest:
- MENTORS/FELLOW MUSICIAN: I know 2 musicians, each working on their own projects, who have lunch twice a month to bounce ideas off each other and then each commitment to doing a few important items on their list before they meet again. OR….Sit down with someone you admire like a teacher or connect with a business person, who can help push you to complete those tasks. If your new mentor does not have time to actually sit & have coffee with you, SKYPE or FACETIME is the next best thing. Having an accountability partner can push you to complete your item and give you the deadline you needed.
- CONNECTING WITH PROFESSIONALS: So, you are on a budget but you need to record your music and don’t have a producer or engineer you have connected with. For business networking get a LinkedIn page. You can search for people with real skills here and see their resume/skills listed online and contact them through this network. Be honest with the amount in your budget up front. I had a student who really wanted to work with a well-known producer and sent him a LinkedIn message and he accepted her terms right away. She was shocked and pleased. Even big producers are sitting around sometimes and waiting for big projects to come in, so why not take your project on. As your career grows, you may be a future source of income to them. So go ahead, send that personal message! If the professional can NOT do it themselves, ask for a recommendation.
- ACQUIRING SKILLS: Tutorials on You Tube are a wonderful source of learning. Yes, it takes time, but if you need some 1,2,3 steps to edit a photo, start a social media page, market your music or how to do your own lyric video….take the time to learn the skill. Almost everything you want to know is on You Tube.
- BARTER YOUR SERVICES. My big block was getting the website done. I had completed a DIY version in the past but I knew that would take me too long to complete so I found a musician who has those skills and bartered my own skills in exchange. So you not only get what you want completed but now you are sharing your own skills. Word of Mouth promotion will bring more notice to your skill set.
- PAYING A PROFESSIONAL. Think about it. If you need help with your social media and you know someone really good at that, ask if they would be willing to work for you twice a week (your payment to them $30 a week) and then work a few extra hours, at that day job, so you can pay them. You will get so much done if a professional is helping you complete your “To Do” list. Also, the internet comes in handy when you are looking for a virtual assistant that will work for $10 to $15 an hour. You will be still directing this person with your ideas but they will actually do the work for you!
Asking for help does not mean you don’t know how to manage your career. We are all good a some skills but most of us are not a master of all. Getting the skills to complete a project OR finding someone to assist you, only shows you are truly a professional. If you want to manage yourself and do a lot of tasks, delegating and diversifying will be your saving grace!
