So today we really get started looking at the calendar, 3 to 4 months ahead, so we can schedule your release dates. As we look at the calendar…remember this information:
- CHOOSE A FRIDAY FOR OFFICIAL MUSIC RELEASE DAYS!
The music industry is use to looking for new music releases on Fridays. So, look professional and pick Friday dates! Many PR campaigns that are organized by publicists, release the audio, then one or two weeks later, release the video. In this DIY world, you can release the audio and video on the same day. JUST REMEMBER you need to have a graphic for every audio and you really need a video for every audio released.
- MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 4 to 6 WEEKS APART FROM EACH RELEASE.
Why? You want to have time to promote each song to both your fans and the press; and by press I am including music blogs, vlogs, newspapers, NPR & radio, magazines ….any place that will review your songs. Most PR outlets need 4 to 5 weeks to review your submission and having more than just one single, will show you are consistently and actively sending music out to the world.
- MATCHING YOUR VIDEO & AUDIO RELEASE
Again, for every audio, you should have a video release of that song. People want to not just hear, but watch and hear a new song. But you can mix it up! A live video, lyric or animated video, photos/video from your recording or the images you get when singing your lyrics. You can get really creative WITHOUT spending hundreds of dollars! Since YouTube is the biggest music streaming service in the world, with its scale – both in terms of its overall users and the more than two billion people who specifically consume music on it; we want to join in to capturing your music audience.
- CHOOSE 10 PR OUTLETS PER RELEASE
We have a full blog on how to find music reviewers, but as a DIY artist, I know there is so much to do…so I recommend after your research try to pick a combination of 10 blogs, music reviewers, video-audio reviewers PER release. Each will have what they need from you, it will take a little time BUT I promise, it will be worth it. There are services like SUBMIT HUB, but don’t spend too much money here! Putting time in to promoting each release is really all you need to get your releases out for review. Again, start with music/video reviews, live reviews before running after a feature interview.
Next, let’s talk about using whatever social media platform you like. Where are most of your fans or your personal connections via the socials? Remembering that Facebook and Instagram are owned by the same company. If you just could learn what FB Creative Studio can do and learn a little graphics through CANVA, you can put all of those posts together and even schedule them out. Here are my suggestions:
- LIVE PERFORMANCES
It would be really GREAT if you could to a live performance of your song or even a set of your new music live in front of an audience around each release date. If that is impossible, you should be doing a live acoustic version of the new song the day before or on the day of the release on some social media platform. If we are releasing an EP, using 3 of the 5 song EP as single releases, you really need to find a live performance place to signal your EP release. You can even consider doing and INVITE ONLY event and consider putting all or some of your performance up virtually. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE YOUR MUSIC EP PROJECT WITH A BIG PARTY! YOU DESERVE IT!
- LIVE VIRTUAL FAN CONNECTION
I suggest at least twice (2x) before each release that you go live on your social media choice, either just one band member or maybe have you all your band members on the screen, and let people know you are excited the new song is coming out. Remember to say the date, invite the audience to add the song to their playlist from Spotify or Apple Play, or have someone tell the story that influenced you to write the song. GET PERSONAL! IT WORKS EVERYTIME!
- REGULAR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS
Yes, I would love if you would post something on your favorite social media twice a week, but that may sound impossible to you. So even if I can get you to post SOMETHING once a week with one social media post, I would be thrilled, especially if you have not really explored the social world. Your Instagram stories and Facebook posts stick around longer opposed to Twitter, Instagram Reels and TikTok, although popular, are mediums where you need to post similar content a few times a day to get noticed. If that is not you, schedule your posts using Facebook Creative Studio for FB & IG. We will talk about what things you may want to post in our next blog….so stay tuned! REGULAR SOCIAL POSTS LET’S YOUR AUDIENCE KNOW THAT YOU ARE RELEASING MUSIC!
Again, you may think all of this is just too much for one person to do. If you have the money you can go to FIVERR and hire some one for $15 an hour to help you with all of this but you will still have to produce your own live media and maybe your own graphics through Canva. If you are in a band, EVERYONE NEEDS TO PARTICIPATE SOMEHOW! You will really be surprise how much you can organize yourself if you just sit down a few weeks before each release and make a list of when and what you need to do to get noticed from the press and your fans.
Take a look at the FACEBOOK LIVE on the MusicBizMentors Facebook page date June 25th and I show you an actual calendar with our release and PR dates.
My final question to you is: “ARE YOU WILLING TO DO 18 SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, 3 PERFORMANCES AND CONTACT 30 PRESS CONTACTS IN THE NEXT 4 MONTHS TO LET THE WORLD KNOW YOU HAVE NEW MUSIC? Your songs are worth it and, so is the fact that: “The world needs music more than ever before!”
